Women in peril in movies. Why Catwoman sucked! |
|
Written by Jpeger
While Spiderman, Superman, and Batman are all high grossing blockbusters, a new evolution of superhero movies are emerging and failing. This is very upsetting to me, for I am a fan of this particular genre of the comic book to movie world. However I feel somewhat robbed as a fan.
What I am speaking about is the new emerging of the super heroine movies. These movies are instant flops. Catwoman was terrible. Elektra was terrible. I'm going to attempt to dissect these films and perhaps shed light on why these movies are not bringing in the blockbuster audiences.
My first obvious choice is the actresses they choose to portray the heroines. Hallie Barry might be great eye candy, but I find it very hard to believe that a 90 pound woman could inflict such harm on 300 pound males. Elektra was terrible because they chose a box office draw actress over a quality actress. Yes, Jennifer Garner was cute in 13 going on 30, however, a warrior she is not.
My second reason is the direction. Neither movies had any. In Catwoman, we hardly had any chance to identify with the character. The personality switch between submissive and dominant was so quick, we hardly had a chance to adjust. Barry's portrayal of Catwoman was mindless. It was a regurgitation of every "The Crow" I have ever seen. Been there, done that, not to spend $8.00 on it again.
My third reason is the directors. I have a feeling that Hollywood is giving these movies to second rate directors that are trying only to see how obnoxiously arrogant and unidentifiable they can make a character. I am sorry, but by the end of Catwoman, I was ready to throw her in the river.
My fourth and final reason, and no one I feel is also the most important, is the story line. The movies written for these heroines do not match the history and the single most important reason why we read them. Drama. Drama. Drama. Drama. Drama.
What Elektra in Catwoman missed was drama and peril. This newfound "embodiment of women" is not what we are looking for in movies. We are looking for our characters to overcome certain perils. Not simply being reborn, and kicking asked the rest of the movie. I don't understand why Hollywood is so shy of allowing women to be helpless heroines. Why is it so politically incorrect? Is far more interesting to watch a movie where the main character is facing certain distraction and doom, and overcomes it at the last moment. In the 1970s version of Superman, Superman was given a kryptonite necklace, and dropped into the pool. Batman and Robin were subjected to man eating plants, and it was up to Batgirl to save them. In Spiderman II, Peter Parker was chained-up. In Smallville, they chained up Clark topless to the barn, and Lana and Lois and Chloe rubbed all over his chest. Would that ever happen to Supergirl? Why aren't these perils occurring to super heroines? Why is it so horrible?
In the 1970s version of Wonder Woman that aired on television, during the course of the series, she was placed in perilous situations early on in the series. Restraints galore. However as the series evolved, less and less of such scenes were shown. Is it any mystery that the ratings also dropped? They took away the peril, they took away the drama, they took away their reason for the show to be watched.
I love women. I love women in peril. I love watching them escaping at the last moment. What I don't like, is a propaganda film for women's lib. It's OK Hollywood, women can be put in peril! After all, when you think of heroine, you think of a woman in a petticoat dress, tied to the railroad tracks! Can't she still kick butt at the end after she's tied to the rocket pointing at outer space with the timer counting down from 30 seconds? Have we become such a society of kiss asses that we are afraid to even indulge in the basic need for drama and peril?

Elektra casting - are you high or something? (Score: 1) by tvector on Thursday, June 02 @ 15:22:01 CDT (User Info | Send a Message) | Jennifer Garner wasn't cast because she was a box office draw and I don't know what "13 Going on 30" had to do with anything. She was cast for the title character because the movie was a spin-off of "Daredevil" and she was continuing the role. She wasn't cast for that role for being a "box office draw" either. Among other reasons she had two or three years of on-screen ass-kicking experience on her television show.
So there's Daredevil and the three years of "Alias". She's trained. Certainly she's qualified to believeably portray a warrior and has done so in literally dozens of performances. If you had problems seeing her as a "warrior" then either the "Elektra" director screwed up or you're tastes and perceptions are clouded. |

A morgue is a morgue is a morgue. They can paint the walls with aggressively
cheerful primary colors and splashy bold graphics, but it's still a holding
place for the dead until they can be parted out to organ banks. Not that I
would have cared normally but my viewpoint was skewed. The relentless
pleasance of the room I sat in seemed only grotesque.

The Bulwer-Lytton fiction contest is held ever year at San Jose State
Univ. by Professor Scott Rice. It is held in memory of Edward George
Earle Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873), a rather prolific and popular (in his
time) novelist. He is best known today for having written "The Last
Days of Pompeii."
Whenever Snoopy starts typing his novel from the top of his doghouse,
beginning "It was a dark and stormy night..." he is borrowing from Lord
Bulwer-Lytton. This was the line that opened his novel, "Paul Clifford,"
written in 1830. The full line reveals why it is so bad:
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents -- except
at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of
wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene
lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty
flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.

Re: Women in peril in movies. Why Catwoman sucked! (Score: 1) by DCfan on Friday, August 04 @ 17:58:35 CDT (User Info | Send a Message) | | This article is right on target! Sheena, Rulah, Nyoka, Bulletgirl, Black Cat (aka Linda Turner), Doll Girl, Jet Girl and a dozen other gorgeous comic book superheroines from the 40's met their demise when danger, peril, suspense, captivity and bondage were taken out of their storylines due to the misguided and grossly exaggerated writings of Frederick Wertham and the comic book code which he gave birth to. Well said "drama and peril" are what the world clammers for, and especially in a superheroine story. Political correctness does seem to play a major factor in ruining good superheroine movies and books. |
